Of all the maintenance tasks for the xTool P3, this is the one most often forgotten and the cheapest to do: cleaning the air pump filter. It’s a mesh that traps dust, and when it gets clogged, it chokes the pump, restricts airflow, and worsens your cuts without you knowing why. Five minutes, a brush, and a mask.

A clogged filter worsens your cuts
The P3 uses pressurized air for two critical things: evacuating smoke from the cut and dissipating heat. That air is moved by a pump, and the pump breathes through a filter (a dust-proof mesh). If the filter clogs, the pump struggles: the airflow to the nozzle decreases, and the cut starts to yellow or become incomplete. It’s one of the silent causes of burnt edges and pump warnings.
How often
- Normal use: check and clean it daily.
- Intensive use (high power, long continuous sessions): every 8 hours of work. In production days, this makes a real difference in heat dissipation.
It seems like a lot, but it only takes seconds once it becomes a habit. We’ve included it in our daily shutdown routine.
What you need
- A small cleaning brush.
- A dust mask.
Important caution: cleaning the filter raises dust into the air by nature. Put on the mask before starting, especially if you work with plywood, MDF, or other materials that produce fine dust. This step is not optional.
How to do it
The procedure is simple: access the filter from the side of the machine, remove the mesh, brush off the accumulated dust, and put it back.
- With the machine off, locate the air pump filter (on the side).
- Remove the filter mesh.
- Brush it to loosen the dust. Do this away from the machine and material, with the mask on.
- If it’s very clogged or damaged, don’t force it: clean it thoroughly or replace it.
- Reinstall it in its place.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if the filter is causing my cut problems?
If the cut has gradually worsened—yellowing more or struggling to cut through material—and you haven’t cleaned it in a while, it’s the prime suspect. Clean it and run a test cut before adjusting any settings.
Can I wash the mesh with water?
Follow your model’s manual instructions. The safest and quickest method is dry brushing; if you wet it, it must be completely dry before reinstalling because it’s part of the air circuit.
What if the pump still gives warnings after cleaning?
