What to look for before you buy
One they can carry themselves
Many children carry their own backpack from the door to the peg. If it's small and light, they carry it happily; if it's heavy, it ends up in the grown-up's hand.
The name where it can be seen
Nursery staff pick up and hand out lots of backpacks and bags every day. A big name on the clothes bag or a charm on the zip avoids mix-ups.
The change of clothes, separate
A bag of its own for the change of clothes keeps the clean clothes apart from everything else. The two-compartment one lets you send two outfits without mixing them, which is welcome during the months of leaving nappies behind.

What size should a nursery backpack be?
Small and light, with room for a change of clothes, the cup and not much else. If it's wider than their back or reaches below the waist, it's too big for a nursery-age child.
Can you put a name on the backpack?
It depends on the model. The kids' drawstring backpack is personalised with their name in iron-on vinyl. The foldable backpack and the character ones are sold with their original design and are identified with a charm with their name engraved, bought separately.
What is the change bag for?
For carrying spare clothes: a bodysuit or T-shirt, trousers, socks and, depending on age, nappies. At these ages changes of clothes are frequent, and this way the clean clothes don't get mixed up with the rest.
What's the difference between the change bag and the dirty laundry bag?
The first holds clean spare clothes. In the dirty laundry bag goes whatever got stained, so it comes home. Many families use both.
