How much does it really cost to maintain an xTool P3: filters, tube, lenses, and consumables?

When you calculate if a machine like this is worth it, you almost always look at the machine’s price. It’s the big number and the painful one. But after months of production, the number that really decides if the business works is another: what it costs to keep it running.

This article shows the figures. All from the European xTool store, excluding VAT, as they were at the time of writing. Prices change, so check them before deciding anything; what doesn’t change is the cost structure, which is what we want you to take away.

The surprise is in the filters

Let’s go straight to the expensive part, which is also the worst documented.

If you work without external smoke exhaust you need the AP2 Max, and the AP2 Max has six filter layers sold separately:

We publish the breakdown by layers because we haven’t found it anywhere in Spanish, and because it changes the conversation. On the owners’ forum, the figure of "about a thousand dollars for the complete set" circulates, which sounds much scarier than the European reality. The real number here is 671 € without VAT, and also you don’t have to replace the whole thing: the layers saturate at different rates, and if the pre-filter is the one that’s black, it’s the pre-filter you replace, for 83 €.

The replacement filters for the AP2 Max are available separately for that very reason.

The detail that makes you waste money

We’ve mentioned it in other articles and here’s where it turns into euros: the AP2 Max calculates filter life based on operating time, not on work done. Even when you leave it on manual mode without cutting anything.

Translated into money: every hour the purifier runs idle is costing you a fraction of those 671 €. This is the most cost-effective advice in this entire article: turn it off as soon as you finish, allowing the couple of minutes needed so it doesn’t smell when you open the lid, and not a second more.

The other side, which reduces anxiety: the estimations are guidelines. The equipment keeps working even if it estimates the filter’s life is over. It doesn’t block you or force you to buy. When you really need to change a filter, you notice because it starts to smell again.

The laser tube: the consumable no one talks about

The CO₂ tube is the heart of the machine — the part that generates the beam — and it doesn’t last forever: it wears out with use. It’s by far the scariest thing when buying a laser of this type. Let’s take that fear away with data.

Let’s start with the first and most important thing: the tube is a replaceable part. It’s not a disposable machine; when the tube reaches the end of its life, you buy it separately and replace it. Its estimated life is 10,000 hours, and to put it in perspective: our machine, after ten months of production, has just over 400 hours of laser use. At that rate, we’re talking about a part we’ll change many years from now.

The best thing about the tube: it warns you before it dies

This is what really reassures, and it’s a point in favor of the design that almost no one explains. The tube doesn’t die overnight. It’s not like one Tuesday morning you turn on the machine and it doesn’t work. As it nears the end of its useful life, you notice the machine’s power gradually decreasing: a material you used to cut on the first pass now needs an extra pass, an engraving comes out a bit weaker. It lets you know well in advance.

In practice, that means you have room to plan the replacement instead of suffering a surprise breakdown in the middle of the season. For a business, that difference — gradual and warned degradation instead of sudden failure — is worth as much as the price of the tube itself.

And in money terms, it’s not the ghost you feared

Three and a half cents per hour. When we saw that number for the first time, it was a weight off our shoulders. With 10,000 hours of life and €341.90 for a replacement, the tube is not an economic problem: it’s a part you’ll change many years from now and costs less than two sets of filters.

You can buy the replacement tube in the brand’s catalog when the time comes. It’s not a purchase you need to anticipate: the machine itself will notify you.

What you need to understand from this table

Three insights that would have saved us money:

1. The purifier is not an accessory, it’s a third of the purchase

Two thousand euros on about five thousand eight hundred for the machine. If you work without external ventilation — like us — the real initial budget is not €5,800, it’s almost €7,800, plus the set of filters that will come sooner or later.

That is the honest number, and it’s the one you should put in the spreadsheet before buying. If you have external ventilation, the IF2 fan costs €166 and you save the entire item.

2. The cheap accessories are the ones used the most

Look at the bottom of the table. The RA3, from €74, is one of the tools we use the most, especially in summer with thermoses and glass. The lens, €49. The meshes, €26 for five.

The relationship between the cost of an accessory and what it contributes is not proportional at all. The three cheapest consumables are the ones we handle every week.

3. The expensive ones are the ones to think about

The IR module, almost €700, is the perfect example and we dedicated an entire article to it: we ended up buying a fiber galvo because it was insufficient. It's not money wasted — it helped us understand how much metal we really needed — but if your plan is to produce metal in series, that money is better spent elsewhere.

A simple cost model

If you want a figure for your spreadsheet, this is the honest way to build it:

  • Tube: ≈ €0.034/hour. Predictable and negligible.
  • Filters: €671 per full set, but lifespan depends on how many hours you keep the purifier on, not on how many you cut. This is the cost you can reduce with discipline.
  • Lenses and meshes: a few dozen euros per year. Background noise.
  • Electricity: depends on your rate, but a machine like this running continuously is not negligible on the bill.
  • Material: by far, your biggest variable cost — and where laser-suitable plywood pays for itself, as we explain in the scorching article.

The conclusion we reached after these months: maintenance of the P3 is cheap except for the filters. And the filters are only expensive if you manage them poorly. With the purifier off when you’re not cutting and changing loose layers instead of the whole set, this cost is controlled.

The cost almost no one calculates: the hour of occupied machine time

There’s a cost that doesn’t appear on any invoice and that in a small workshop weighs more than filters: the time the machine is busy doing something unproductive.

Two real examples from us, to make it clear:

  • Inappropriate material. DIY plywood forces you to reduce speed from about 40 mm/s to about 12 mm/s because of the glue. That cheap sheet is costing you more than triple the machine time. If the machine is your bottleneck in peak season, no price difference per sheet makes up for that.
  • Slow metal engraving. Every hour the P3 spends doing a job that another tool would do in a fraction of the time is an hour it’s not cutting wood, which is where it really performs.

The healthy way to look at it is to assign an hourly value to the machine — what it earns in one hour during the season — and include it in the comparison. Once you do that, decisions that seemed like savings reveal themselves for what they really are.

And something similar happens with electricity. Here we can give you the starting figure because it’s on the machine’s own specification label: 1,700 W input power.

Be careful how you read that figure: it’s the maximum input power, not the average consumption. The machine isn’t pulling 1,700 W continuously —the tube doesn’t fire all the time, and the chiller and fans cycle on and off— so taking it as actual consumption would give you a hugely inflated bill. As a ceiling for sizing the electrical installation, however, it’s exactly the number you need: 1,700 W on a 230 V domestic line is about 7.4 A just for the laser, not counting the purifier. If you’re going to plug both into the same circuit with other loads, factor that in before the breaker trips halfway through a three-hour job.

For the real cost, multiply the hours it’s on by your rate and apply a usage factor; we don’t have our own measurement with a clamp meter, so we won’t make up a percentage.

What doesn’t cost money but does cost time

To complete the picture, because a cost that doesn’t appear on any invoice is still a cost: cleaning. It’s simple —two screws and a cotton swab with alcohol for the lens— and quickly becomes routine. It’s detailed in the maintenance article.

If we had to sum up the answer to "How much does it really cost to maintain a P3?" in one sentence: less than we feared, as long as you don’t leave the purifier running longer than necessary.

The elephant in the room: is the extra cost worth it?

We won’t dodge it, because it’s the first objection anyone has: the P3 is more expensive than other 80 W CO₂ lasers. It’s a fact, no debate. The honest question isn’t whether it’s more expensive, but whether that extra cost gives you something in return. In our case, yes, and for very specific reasons.

We started with the P3 with no experience in a large-format laser: we came from a 30 × 30 galvo, and knew nothing about calibrating an optical path or tubes. The leap was intimidating. Yet, once physically set up, we calibrated the optical path with the app’s visual aid and were producing an hour later. That "from zero to producing in an afternoon," for two people who had never handled a machine like this, is part of what you pay for.

The rest has been taken care of by time: it has proven to be a reliable machine that has not required extra maintenance, with support that responds within a few hours of contacting them —in some cases directly via chat, within minutes—. And we say this with experience, not blindly: we have experience with other well-known laser brands made in China, and their support has not been up to xTool's standards.

Weighing it up, the extra cost isn’t outrageous, and it pays off financially to feel supported, which is exactly what has happened. When the machine is the one billing, knowing that if something goes wrong there’s someone on the other end within hours —not weeks— is another line in the budget, and one of the best investments.

A small but revealing example of that support: there was a maintenance item —a side filter— that at first didn’t even appear in the instructions. When xTool added it, they sent us the replacement for free, without us asking. These are details that don’t appear on any cost sheet but define what it’s like to live with a brand long-term.

The expense we do recommend adding: extended support

And since we’re talking about support, here’s a spending recommendation that many people find odd but that we defend without hesitation: we contracted extended support, and we would do it again.

Here Javi draws on his other professional life. He comes from the world of servers and datacenter equipment, where extended maintenance is not an optional extra they try to sell you: it’s the norm. When a machine is your work tool, you want exactly two things, and you want them guaranteed: quick responses and replacement parts available when you need them. In a professional environment, that’s not left to chance.

Transferred to the P3, the reasoning is identical. For a percentage of the machine’s cost —not a second machine, a percentage— you buy peace of mind for your business: so if one day the equipment that feeds you stops working, you don’t depend on goodwill or standard timelines. For a hobbyist, it might not be worth it. For someone who bills with the machine, it’s one of the best understood insurances.
