When we set up the xTool P3 in October 2025, the first serious decision wasn’t about cutting parameters. It was what to do with the smoke.

Our workshop is on the upper floor of a family home and has no smoke vent to the outside. This is not unusual: many people who buy a machine this size put it wherever they can, not where it would be ideal. And this is exactly the situation where the extraction decision stops being an accessory and becomes part of the purchase.
The first thing to understand: the P3 doesn’t extract anything by itself
The P3 doesn’t have its own extractor. What it does is push air toward a rear outlet, and from there it depends on what you attach: the IF2 2.0 inline fan that comes included, or a filter purifier like the AP2 Max.
The difference between the two is not quality, it’s function:
- The IF2 2.0 is a fan. It takes the smoke and sends it through a tube to another place. That other place has to be outside. It doesn’t clean anything: it just moves it.
- The AP2 Max is a purifier. It passes the smoke through a filter array and returns clean air to the same room. It doesn’t need a window.
If you have an outside vent, the included IF2 is all you need and you save a lot of money. If you don’t, like us, the purifier is not optional.
The mistake to avoid: chaining the two
It’s the first idea anyone has: if I have a fan and a purifier, I put them in series and I’ll get more suction. That’s exactly what you shouldn’t do, and xTool says it loud and clear:
This problem occurs when the AP2 Max and the IF2 2.0 are used together. They cannot operate simultaneously. When using the AP2 Max, the IF2 2.0 fan must be removed.
The reason is physics, not electronic compatibility. Two fans in series do not add airflow: they create a pressure bottleneck between them that chokes the flow. The result is that you suck less than with just one.
And the consequences, according to what has been read on the owners’ forum, are not just aesthetic. They range from smoke coming out through the machine’s joints and house fire detectors going off, to more flame than expected during cutting — because if the smoke isn’t evacuated, it stays there feeding the combustion right where the laser is working.
It’s worth saying this precisely, so as not to blame the wrong party: the extractor does not "cause" the flame. The flame is an inherent danger when cutting certain materials with a high-power laser — something xTool warns about repeatedly — and good extraction neither creates nor eliminates it: what it does is not make it worse, evacuating the smoke that would otherwise feed it. Setting up the airflow incorrectly doesn’t start a fire; what it does is remove a safety margin that you do have when the extraction is properly done. And that’s exactly why a laser is operated in person: the machine monitors flames with its cameras and alerts you, but the decision is made by the person in front of it.
One or the other. Never both.
Why the "normal" AP2 isn’t suitable for a P3
There are two versions of the purifier, and here it’s wise not to skimp in the wrong place: the standard AP2 can’t keep up with a P3. The machine has a large work area and an 80 W tube working hard; the airflow it needs is that of the Max version.
If you come from a smaller machine and already have an AP2, bad news: reusing it is not a plan, it’s a source of frustration.
Our experience with the AP2 Max, no frills
Let’s get to what really matters: whether it works or not.
It’s wonderful. It eliminates practically one hundred percent of the smell.
And we say this with the machine running on the upper floor of a house where people live. Under normal working conditions — wood, plywood, engraving — there is no smell in the house. Literally none.
The only exception we have found is cutting acrylic and opening the lid to remove the piece: at that moment, when opening, a burst of smell comes out. And it has a trivial solution, which is what we use: leave the AP2 Max running a couple of minutes longer before opening. With that, it doesn’t even smell when you open the lid.
If you work without external ventilation, the AP2 Max is the piece that makes everything else possible. For the smell, it is the strongest recommendation we will make in this blog. But it would be dishonest to stop there, because there is a downside that almost no one tells you about and that can be decisive: the noise.
The noise: the honest nuance that might change your decision
Let’s be very clear, because you won’t read this on the product sheet and we would have liked to know it: the AP2 Max is deafening. Inside it’s a huge turbine, and it sounds like what it is.
To give you a real idea, not a manual one: we usually use it at 30-50% of its capacity — not even at max — and at that level it’s almost impossible to hold a conversation more than half a meter away. It’s not an annoying background hum; it’s a noise that dominates everything else in the room.
This completely changes the answer to "Can I have a P3 without ventilation at home?" The smell, as we’ve said, is solved. The noise isn’t. And that’s why, to be honest, we don’t think it’s realistic to have this equipment installed in an apartment or a normal flat, with neighbors next door, above, or below. In our case it works because it’s on the top floor of a duplex, with no neighbors: we can afford that roar because it doesn’t bother anyone but us while we work.
It’s not a defect of the AP2 Max — a turbine moving that airflow is going to make noise no matter what, it’s physics — but it’s a factor you need to consider before buying, not discover afterward. If your workshop is a room in a shared apartment with the life of a household, seriously consider whether the noise is bearable. If you have an isolated space — a duplex with no neighbors like ours, a commercial space, an annex — it won’t be a problem.
The real downside, and it’s by design
Now the part no one mentions in reviews, because it only shows up after months with the machine.
The AP2 Max calculates filter life by running time, not by work done. And that includes the time you leave it on in manual mode.
Think about what it means. If you leave the purifier running because you're preparing the next job, or because you forgot, or because you set it to manual to ventilate while cleaning, you are burning through the lifespan of some filters that aren’t cheap without having filtered anything. The device doesn’t distinguish between "sucking dense acrylic smoke" and "running idle in a clean room." To the counter, it’s the same.
The habit we’ve adopted, and recommend from day one: turn off the purifier as soon as it finishes its job, with the two-minute margin we mentioned earlier and no more. It’s a small gesture that directly translates into savings.
Estimators are guidelines, not a wall
A nuance that eases anxiety: filter life estimators are "soft". When the device estimates a filter has reached the end of its life, it keeps working the same. It doesn’t lock up or force you to buy anything to keep going. It’s a warning, not a lock.
That doesn’t mean ignoring it indefinitely—a saturated filter stops filtering, and then you’ll start smelling again—but you can finish the high season without rushing to place an urgent order.
Changing the filters is simple
Not much to add here, and that’s good news: changing the filters is easy and the lifespan seems reasonable for the use we give it. No special tools or dismantling half the device are needed. We’ll talk about cost with numbers once we have enough replacements behind us to give an honest figure; we can say upfront that it’s not negligible and should be factored in before buying the machine, not after.
The installation detail that’s often forgotten: the space behind
One thing worth measuring before deciding where the machine goes, because afterwards it forces you to redo the workshop: the P3 needs between 17 and 20 cm of clearance behind for the extraction tube.
It seems small but it’s not. It means the table can’t be pushed against the wall, and that space must be added to the approximately 64 × 115 cm that the machine occupies on the floor. If the purifier is behind or beside it, the actual footprint of the complete installation is much larger than the catalog states.
The other beginner mistake is the tubing layout: the more bends and longer the path, the less effective flow you get. Use a short tube and keep it as straight as possible. A long section full of curves turns a good extraction system into a mediocre one without any error message to warn you.
Two quirks worth knowing in advance
Pairing the IF2 is done via Bluetooth by pressing the power button. You won’t find this explained clearly, and it’s one of those things that can have you thinking for ten minutes that the device is defective.
Filter sensors give false negatives. On the forum, messages like "activated carbon filter not detected" or "high-density filter not detected" repeat with the filter perfectly placed. If this happens to you, before assuming anything is dead: remove the filter, check that the contact is clean, and reinstall it firmly.
A note about xTool support
Since we’re talking about things that fail: if you end up opening a case with technical support for any of these issues, there’s a shortcut that works. Record a video showing the problem.
It’s what we’re systematically asked for, and it makes perfect sense: describing a strange noise, an odor, or insufficient airflow in writing is almost impossible, and a thirty-second video saves three back-and-forth emails. Our experience with brand support has been consistently good, and part of that is simply having learned to give them upfront what they need to work.
Summary for those deciding
- Do you have an outlet to the outside? The included IF2 2.0 is enough. Don’t buy a purifier.
- Don’t have it? AP2 Max, and budget it as part of the machine, not as an optional extra.
- Never both at the same time. When mounting the purifier, the IF2 is removed.
- The standard AP2 is not enough for a P3.
- Turn off the purifier when you’re done. The filter life counter runs even if you’re not cutting.
- Account for the noise. The AP2 Max is deafening; it solves the odor, but we don’t see it as realistic in an apartment with neighbors. You need an isolated space.
The conclusion, after these first weeks: without ventilation to the outside, the P3 remains usable in an inhabited space as long as that space can handle the purifier’s noise —a shop, an annex, a duplex without neighbors like ours—. With the right purifier, understanding that the filter is a consumable and not a one-time purchase, and with noise carefully considered beforehand, it works. In a normal apartment surrounded by domestic life, be honest with yourself about the noise before buying.
