What is UV printing and why did we want it in the workshop?

Every time a new technology appears in the world of customization, it comes with three acronyms, four promises, and a bunch of videos where everything works perfectly the first time. That’s what’s happening now with UV printing.

So before we dive into specific machines, let’s clarify exactly what each thing is, how it differs from what we already do with laser, and why we’ve been chasing a UV printer for the workshop for a year.

UV printing, in one sentence

A UV printer deposits drops of ink onto an object and cures them instantly with ultraviolet light. The ink neither absorbs nor evaporates: it solidifies on the spot, immediately. That’s why it can print on materials that don’t absorb anything — glass, metal, acrylic, ceramic, plastic — and why the piece comes out of the machine dry and ready to handle.

This instant curing brings two consequences that really matter:

Full color on anything. There’s no need to prepare the surface with receptive layers or limit yourself to treated materials. It prints right on top, and that’s it.

Relief. Since each layer cures before receiving the next, they can be stacked. Stacking creates real texture, where you can run your finger over the design and feel it. This effect impresses the most in person and is hardest to appreciate in a photo.

The acronyms, sorted out

This is where everyone gets confused, so let’s go slowly.

Direct UV. Printing directly on the object. This is what we just described: the piece goes into the machine and comes out printed.

UV DTF. Printing on a film and then transferring the result to the object, like a single-piece sticker. It’s used for things that don’t fit in the machine or can’t lie flat: a whole bottle, a helmet, the corner of a piece of furniture. The finish is adhesive, not ink on the material, and you can feel that difference to the touch.

DTG. Direct to garment, direct printing on fabric. It’s a different technology: water-based ink on fabric, fixed with heat. Nothing to do with UV ink, even if the machine does both.

DTF. Direct to film, the textile version of transfer: printing on a film, sprinkling powder adhesive, curing it, and ironing it onto the garment.

When a brand announces a “4 in 1” machine, they usually mean these four. It’s important to know that these are four processes with four different workflows, not four buttons.

How it differs from laser engraving

This is the comparison we get asked about the most, and the short answer is that they don’t compete.

Laser removes or transforms material. It doesn’t add anything: it burns the wood, melts the lacquer, raises the anodizing. The result has real physical depth and lasts as long as the object because it’s part of it. In return, the color depends on the material.

UV printing adds material. It puts a layer of ink on top. It achieves full color and photographic gradients where laser can only give you one tone, but that layer is a layer: it can scratch and needs the surface to be clean and compatible.

To put it in examples from our daily catalog: a child’s name on a beechwood box calls for laser, because it toasts on the grain and ages well. A company’s four-color logo on a steel thermos calls for UV, because laser produces a single tone and doesn’t resemble their brand. And some pieces call for both.

And sublimation

Sublimation turns ink into gas with heat and pressure, and that gas goes inside the object’s coating. The color becomes integrated, not on top, so you don’t feel it to the touch and it withstands washing with a durability that UV printing can’t match.

Its factory limit is: it needs objects prepared for sublimation, with a polyester layer or a specific coating, and it works poorly or not at all on white or light colors. You live within the sublimatable catalog.

UV printing is just the opposite: it frees you from the catalog, at the cost of the ink being on top.

The three orders we currently do halfway

We make personalized gifts: weddings, communions, births, corporate details. And for years we’ve been saying no to the same things.

We say no to the photo. A photo is continuous tone and color, and laser only knows how to give you a monochrome version. You can make something decent, but it’s not the photo.

We say no to the corporate logo as is. Almost all logos have two or three colors that are part of the company’s identity. Engraving it in one tone is delivering a client their brand halfway.

We say no to the child’s illustration, which is probably what hurts us the most. A colorful drawing arrives, and what we can return is its silhouette.

It’s not that those orders get lost: they’re done differently and with a different result. A UV printer in the workshop turns those three “no’s” into three “yes’s,” on the same pieces we already work on and with the same laser cutting and engraving what it needs to.

What we won’t pretend

Every new technology arrives with a layer of enthusiasm on top that’s worth scraping off before spending money. These are the three questions we ask ourselves and still don’t have answers to:

How long it lasts. A cured ink layer on metal, on an object used daily and put in a sink, isn’t the same as on a decorative picture. Until we see our pieces after months of real use, anything we say would just repeat the brochure.

How much each printed piece costs. Not the machine price: the ink and the pieces consumed in use. In printing, whoever doesn’t calculate consumables ends up working for free.

How long it takes. A beautiful object that takes forty minutes isn’t a sellable product, it’s a demonstration. Time per piece decides what can be offered in the catalog and what remains a special order.

These three questions are what we’ll answer here as we get real data. Meanwhile, there’s already something concrete on the horizon: xTool, the brand of our production laser, is preparing its own UV printer. There’s no datasheet, price, or date yet, so there’s nothing to analyze. When there is, we’ll be watching.
