The fire is real: the xTool P3 CO₂ fire extinguisher bottle and the two months we worked without it

At the beginning of December 2025, the P3 CO₂ fire extinguisher bottle finally arrived. We had ordered it with the machine, in the initial bundle, two months earlier.

In those two months of waiting, the machine stopped twice in emergency because it detected dangerous fire inside.

This is the article that matters most to us of all we’re going to write about this machine, and we want to make one thing clear from the start: this is not against xTool. The extinguishing system is an accessory that the brand itself offers, recommends, and warns about. We are on the same page. What we’re sharing is what happens when, for whatever reason, you have to work without it.

The fire is real and can happen

When you read “fire extinguishing system” in a machine’s specs, your mind files it away with other legal warnings. A fire extinguisher is something you buy, hang on the wall, and hope never to use.

With an 80 W CO₂ laser cutting wood, the situation is different. There can be flames inside the machine. Not sparks, not a glowing spot: flames. And it’s not a fault of the equipment or an exotic situation: it’s the predictable consequence of concentrating a lot of energy on combustible material, in a closed space with oxygen.

It happened to us twice in two months of intense use. Not with unusual material or experiments: during normal work.

And it’s important to size it correctly, without drama but without downplaying it: a fire in a laser doesn’t just put your device at risk. It puts your business at risk — if the workshop burns down, it’s over — and, first and foremost, it can put lives at risk. That’s why this is the only blog post where the tone is a warning rather than enthusiasm. The good news, which we’ll explain now, is that you’re not alone against this risk: the machine has several layers of protection designed exactly for this.

What the P3 does when it detects fire

This is probably the most useful thing we can share because it’s what no one tells you before it happens, and at the moment, you don’t have time to look it up.

The machine stops abruptly and starts beeping. And the beep is really loud.

It’s not a discreet on-screen warning or a polite tone. It’s an alarm designed for you to hear it from another room and drop whatever you’re doing. The first time it goes off, the scare is considerable, and that’s exactly its purpose.

And here’s a nuance we don’t want lost, because it’s important and does justice to the machine: seeing a flame doesn’t always mean something is wrong. We’re passing a substrate with a high-power laser; in some jobs, seeing some flame is normal. That’s why the system doesn’t react the same way to every fire.

xTool doesn’t just warn: it puts multiple layers of protection in place

This is exactly what we discovered over time and what made us respect the machine’s design. The P3 and xTool Studio together set up a multi-layer defense against fire:

  • Fire detection by cameras. The machine continuously monitors the interior during the job.
  • Two levels of reaction, not one. When it sees a moderate flame — the normal cutting flame — it warns but lets it continue. Only when it considers the fire excessive does it enter panic mode: it stops the machine dead, beeps very loudly and continuously, and applies extinguishing.
  • CO₂ bottle for active extinguishing. This is what truly puts out the fire in panic mode. It doesn’t just stop: it extinguishes.
  • Prior warning for material. xTool Studio warns you before starting when the job uses materials identified as highly flammable.
  • Prior warning for bottle. Studio issues a large warning before each job if it detects the CO₂ bottle is not installed or is empty.

In other words: xTool does everything in its power to prevent fire, warn you when there is a risk, and mitigate it if it happens. That deserves full credit. What none of those layers can do for you is be in front of the machine, and that’s exactly the point.

The difference the bottle makes

This is where our story fits in, and why we tell it. That last layer — active extinguishing — depends on the bottle being in place. We went two months without it (we'll explain why now), so during our two scares the machine did everything else — detect, stop dead, beep like crazy — but had nothing to extinguish with. We were saved by being there.

It’s easy to imagine the same event with the operator at another plant or with their back turned wearing headphones, and then the story changes. A laser is operated in person: it’s not a manual recommendation, it’s the condition of use, and xTool repeats this again and again. The bottle doesn’t replace you being there; it’s the safety net for when, even being there, things get out of hand.

Why we were without it for two months

It’s worth explaining precisely because the reason isn’t what one might imagine.

It’s not that we didn’t buy it. It was in the initial order, with the machine. What happened is that there was a stock break at the factory and, moreover, the bottle doesn’t travel like the rest of the accessories: it contains compressed gas and goes through special logistics channels, with much longer lead times.

And this is where xTool did something we find remarkable: instead of leaving us waiting without further notice, support wrote to us explaining the situation and giving us a concrete and safe alternative for the meantime. This is the email we received:

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Because the CO₂ bottle you ordered contains compressed gas, it must be transported through special logistics channels, resulting in a longer delivery time compared to usual accessories. Without this CO₂ bottle, your P3 machine can continue to operate normally. To ensure your safety during use, we strongly recommend equipping it with bottles from other brands (such as SodaStream) that meet the following specifications: 0.6 L carbonated water cartridges, minimum CO₂ charge of 400 g, M18×1.5 thread, TR21-4 valve. The thread specification is M18×1.5. It is a consumable that must always be replaced after use. Therefore, when this bottle arrives later, you can use it as a spare and it won’t go to waste.

We find this to be an honest response. They acknowledge the delay, explain the real cause, plainly state that the machine works without the bottle—which is true—and instead of using this to make you wait for their product, they tell you how to solve it yourself with material from another brand.

The bottle specification, which almost nobody publishes

From that email comes a practical detail we haven’t seen anywhere in Spanish. The replacements are standard and can be bought outside of xTool, as long as they meet this:

The thread and valve are what matter. If those two match, the bottle fits; if they don’t, no adapter is worth it in a safety system.

Let it be clear whose recommendation this is: this was indicated to us in writing by xTool’s technical support, it’s not our own idea. And verifying that the exact bottle you buy meets these specifications is the buyer’s responsibility. We’re talking about a fire extinguishing system: there’s no improvising or approximating here.

Note: the P3 bottle is not the same as those for other xTool models.

This warning applies to the entire article because it’s an easy mistake to make and expensive to discover.

The CO₂ bottle for the P3 is specific to this model and is not the same as those for other machines from the brand. If you search for “xTool CO₂ bottle” and buy the first one that appears, you’re very likely to end up with one for a different device.

Always check that the product specifies P3, or guide yourself by the M18×1.5 thread and the TR21-4 valve from the table above. With any other accessory, making a mistake means an annoying return. With this one, it means believing you have protection when you don’t.

When we consider it essential

After what we experienced, this is our stance, and it’s more nuanced than a simple “always buy it”:

Don’t work without it if you’re cutting flammable materials, specifically thick woods or acrylic. These are the two cases where cutting is slow, energy concentrates for a long time in the same spot, and the material provides plenty of fuel. Our two scares fall into that category.

Superficially engraving on materials that barely produce smoke and with the machine in front, the risk is different. We’re not saying you can go ahead without protection; we’re saying the risk gap between engraving a keychain and cutting several millimeters of acrylic is huge, and if you have to prioritize, prioritize there.

What we do now, beyond the extinguisher

The bottle is the safety net, not the plan. These are the habits those two months left us:

  • Don’t leave the machine cutting alone. Recording, with the alarm you can hear, is debatable. Cutting thick material, no. It’s the rule we’ve read the most and the one least followed until something happens.
  • Have proper extraction. Smoke that is not evacuated feeds combustion right where the laser is working. We explain it in detail in the smoke extraction article, and it is directly related to this.
  • Clean bed. Small scraps and accumulated debris underneath are tinder. Emptying the lower tray is one of the most worthwhile workshop tasks.
  • Proper material. Plywood with the wrong glue forces you to slow down and repeat passes, which is exactly the recipe for fire. It’s explained in the scorched plywood article.
  • Know what you’re going to do before the alarm sounds. The first seconds with that background beep are not a good time to think for the first time where the extinguisher is in the house.

The summary we would have liked to read in October

The P3 is an excellent machine and we will not stop recommending it because of this. But fire inside the work area is not a theoretical manual scenario: it happened to us twice in two months of normal use, the machine detected it and stopped both times, and both times we were very glad to be there.

The extinction system is the difference between a scare with a loud beep and a serious problem. If you are setting up your order, don’t leave it out to save money. And if you have to wait for it like we did, you know there is a standard alternative in the meantime, as stated by the manufacturer.
