What an xTool O1 Omni really costs: heads, ink, and maintenance

The price of a printer is the number that hurts, but it’s not what decides if the business is profitable. What decides is the other one: what it costs to keep it running.

In a UV printer that cost has three parts: the printhead, the ink, and the maintenance. Let’s go through all three, with today’s European prices excluding VAT and stating the source of each figure.

The printhead: the question xTool hasn’t answered

The O1 Omni uses Epson F1080 printheads: one for the Single UV, two for the Dual UV, and two for the UV-DT (differences between versions). It’s a wear part, like the tube in a CO₂ laser.

xTool has published its estimated lifespan: between six and twelve months depending on use and maintenance. What it hasn’t published, and is the most repeated question in the entire community since the reservoirs were opened, is how much it costs to replace it. There are entire threads requesting it in writing, including people who already have four or five other machines from the brand, with no official response.

What there are, however, are two different users giving the same figure: 399 per printhead. It’s community data, not from the factory, and we present it as such — but the fact that two independent sources match gives it considerable weight.

And there are two nuances that change the calculation a lot:

You change it yourself. According to someone who has already done this operation on equivalent machines, it’s a matter of a few screws and a flat cable. No authorized technical service is needed. Watch out for a detail mentioned in passing that’s worth remembering: the first day you have to prime the printhead before using it.

Life is not measured in months, it is measured in use. This nuance comes from someone in the community and seems the most important point: wear depends on how much you print and whether you do maintenance, not the calendar. Used frequently and well maintained, a printhead can last close to two years. Used once a month and neglected, much less. It sounds counterintuitive but that’s exactly how the injectors work: what kills them is drying out, not working.

Why this weighs more in the two-head versions

If the printhead is at 399, the Single UV has one replacement invoice and the Dual UV and UV-DT have two.

And there’s a second, more subtle effect raised by a user that we haven’t seen disproved: in a dual-head machine, you have to keep the second head alive even if you don’t use it. Loaded ink, humidifier, and cleaning cycles that consume ink. If you buy two heads and only work with one, you’re spending consumables on a part that isn’t giving you work.

It’s a strong argument in favor of the Single UV for those who won’t often use the second head.

The ink

Closed cartridge system: xTool ink or nothing. It was in doubt for weeks — the owner group was split between cartridge and tank — but xTool itself has put it in writing: the O1 “was designed with a closed cartridge ink system.” For those coming from open system printers, this is a real limitation, and it’s good to know beforehand, not after. There are desktop alternatives with open tanks and bulk ink — the most cited is the Longer ePrint — whose main argument is exactly the operating cost; if you print a lot of volume, that’s the key point for comparison.

Buying UV ink and textile ink separately is more expensive than the set, as usual.

A color cartridge at €15 is an aggressive price compared to what has been normal in this segment. But beware the headline: what matters is not the price per cartridge but the cost per job, and that depends on how much ink the machine uses, which is exactly what no one has published yet.

What is unknown about consumption

We looked for this answer and didn’t find it, and we’re not the only ones: in the community, some have explicitly asked for it — coming from an Epson DTG and wanting to compare — and haven’t gotten a figure. The closest are videos from a creator showing consumption on screen while printing.

There are also two specific and costly unknowns:

How much ink it takes to switch from UV to textile in the UV-DT version. In comparable equipment, switching modes purges a significant amount of white ink.

How much cleaning cycles consume, especially if the machine is stopped. It’s the invisible expense: ink that goes away without printing anything.

Until there are machines working daily in real workshops, any cost per piece figure you read — including any we might invent ourselves — is smoke.

Maintenance and extended warranty

The maintenance reservoirs — the container where the ink from cleaning cycles goes — cost €24.19 for the UV and €24.19 for the textile. They are cheap; the unknown is how often they fill up.

The extended warranty, xToolCare, is priced by version: €307.34 for the Single UV, €389.62 for the Dual UV, and €410.19 for the UV-DT.

We already wrote about this when discussing the cost of our laser and our stance hasn’t changed: when a machine is your work tool, paying a percentage of its price for quick support and available parts is one of the insurances that makes the most sense. For a hobbyist, it probably isn’t worth it.

The real entry budget

Adding the minimum to start working the day the machine arrives, excluding VAT:

And from there, what repeats every year. With the printhead lifespan declared by xTool and the price handled by the community, the printhead replacement costs look like this in the worst case — replacing them all every six months —: 798 per year for the Single and 1,596 per year for the dual-head models. In the best case — frequent use, maintenance done, one replacement every two years — it’s about 200 per year for the Single and 400 for the dual-heads.

That range, from 200 to 1,600 euros per year just on printheads, is the difference between a business that works and one that doesn’t. And it depends on two things: how much you print and whether you do maintenance. You don’t fully control the first; you do control the second.

What we take away from all this

The number to focus on before buying is not the price of the machine, but the price of the printhead. When a brand publishes the lifespan of a part but not its price, the information is incomplete, and it shouldn’t be normal that users have to share the price through a forum.

And maintenance is not an optional weekend task: with this kind of machine, it literally means money. Every cleaning cycle you skip today out of laziness costs you an early replacement of a printhead.
